Sickle Cell Diseases Diabetes Mellitus Sickle Cell Diseases Headed ICMR(Indian Council of Medical Research) Sickle Cell Research Center for Study of Sickle Cell Disease at V.S.S Medical College, Burla, Orissa. The disease was largely unknown in India except a few stray reports. Collaboration work of Dr. B.C. Kar with Dr. G.R. Serjeant and Dr. D.J. Weatheral led to various revelations. Dr. B.C. Kar is the first Indian worker to reveal: Widespread prevalence of sickle Cell disease in India. Independent origin of bs Asian Haplotype High Levels of Hb F linked bs mutation and its effect on Sickle Cell disease. Clinical profile of Sickle cell disease in India is different from Africa and America. Widespread Prevalence of Alpha Thalassaemia and its interaction with Sickle Cell Disease. Study of "Natural History of Sickle cell disease in India" continuing for last 14 years and the series has 1800 patients under follow up. He was the Prinipal Investigator of a Research Project on "Sickle Sell Hemoglobinopathy" in Western Orissa with two full terms research assistants from 1976 to 1979 funded by Lady Tata Memorial Trust, Mumbai. Attended "Europeans Conference on Neonatal Screening programme" in London(1991). He was sponsored by British Council to visit Hammersmith Hospital, Kings College Hosptial , School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London and Radcliff Hospital on Oxford in 1991 and MRC for exchange of scientific ideas on Sickle Cell Disease. Held discussion with Researchers in the field of Sickle Cell disease and delivered lectures on findings in India. Back to Top Diabetes Mellitus Important Observation on clinical pattern of diabetes Mellitus was documented in M.D (Medicine) thesis in 1963 and was published in "Diabetes" in 1965. It was the starting point of research into several types of Diabetes in Tropics namely: Malnutrition related Diabetes(J Type) Type 2 lean diabetes Type 2 diabetes in the young Pancreatic Calcification in young Diabetes of Orissa These various types of Diabetes has been duly recognized by WHO though with different nomenclature.
